The Summer Binge-Watching Special

I’m going to be honest, guys: while I’m writing this article, the heater in my room is making a loud and worrisome whiny noise, so to block it out I am listening to a very loud mix based on the life of Alexander the Great, which consists mainly of Kanye West songs. (Because much like Kanye, Alexander was a self-absorbed bro who thought he was all that and a bag of chips.) So I’m sorry if this blog is vaguely incoherent, but all I can hear is the whine and the word “clique” over and over. So just take that into account.

So, this is my last blog of the year! That’s really exciting. This has kind of been the semester from hell, but I can’t believe that I’m already done with my sophomore year in college. That’s really crazy. I’ve loved writing this blog over the past four semesters, so even though I’m going to be studying abroad in London next year, I really hope that I can continue with it!

But since this blog is such an integral part of my life, I’d like to spend my last entry continuing my favorite series: the “Let Me Entertain You” specials. This week’s edition is the Summer Special, in which I will give you all of my recommendations for binge-watching this summer. I personally have no idea what I’m going to be doing during June, July, and August, which is vaguely panic-worthy, but I do know that I’m going to be watching a ton of TV. Maybe you’ll join me in watching these shows, and we’ll have a fun TV/movie book club! (If you do, tweet @Grace_Segers to let me know.) Without further ado, here are Grace’s recommendations for summer fun:

  1. Daredevil

Oh my god, guys. This show is just so phenomenal. Some people proselytize religion, I proselytize Daredevil (you can read my review of it in the print Daily here). This show manages to be engaging and entertaining, with morally complex characters of diverse origins, and some of the best damn fight scenes you’ve ever seen. The first season is on Netflix. It’s tragically only thirteen episodes, but if you’re anything like me, you’ll want to watch it more than once.

  1. Star Wars

Unless you’re completely disengaged from popular culture, you’re aware that a new Star Wars movie is coming out this December. You’ve also probably already seen the new trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. While you’re getting pumped for the newest edition in the saga, you should revisit the old ones as well. I actually really like the prequels, mostly because they’re what I loved when I was little (the middle school thirst for Hayden Christensen was real). But nothing beats the original movies, which still make me cry with their awesomeness. You should also check out this video of Matthew McConaughey reacting to the new Star Wars trailer:

  1. Parks and Recreation

Parks and Recreation is just the bomb diggidy. No other sitcom has ever come close to it in terms of genuine emotion and pure, positive hilarity. If you haven’t seen it, definitely binge it now, if you have, take the time to revisit Pawnee. It’s definitely worth a trip back. Also, here’s a picture of me with Retta, aka Donna Meagle, just because:

(Update: “Turn Down for What” is now playing, and I’m suddenly seized with the desire to dance around my room like a frat boy idiot for a few minutes. Be right back.)

  1. Orphan Black

The third season is currently airing on BBC America, but you should definitely start from the beginning of this phenomenal show. Starring the unbelievably good Tatiana Maslany, Orphan Black is a television show so complex yet entertaining that you need to see it to believe. I won’t say much about it, because that would ruin the surprise, but this show about female clones is more heartfelt, badass, and engaging than you could ever imagine.

  1. Friends

There’s a reason this sweet ‘90s sitcom is a classic, and that’s because it’s genuinely awesome. Sure, some of the references may be a little dated, but the message of true friendship remains just as powerful as ever. Definitely go back to Central Perk and see the friends.

(Update: the whining noise stopped, but the playlist is so good that I have to keep listening. If you’re interested, this is it.)

  1. The Avengers

You know me, I’m super pumped for Avengers: Age of Ultron. Unfortunately, I don’t have time to rewatch all of the pre-Age of Ultron movies before I see it on April 30, but I’m totally going to once I’m home. Join me in all of the super-heroic glory, roughly thirty hours of excellent jokes, battle sequences, and hot men in various states of undress.

That’s all folks! Good luck with finals, have a great summer, and I’ll hopefully see you next year!
