Spring has barely started, but last weekend was the beginning of the summer movie season. Epic action flicks are dominated the box office, finally bringing some excitement to what has been, so far, a lackluster year for movies. If you’re looking for a break from the monotony of studying, go to a movie theater for some superhero or biblical violence.
1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Marvel Studios’ latest addition to the Avengers universe set the record for the best April opening for a film ever. It made $96.2 million last weekend, and is guaranteed to make lots this weekend as well. It’s a very fun and even interesting movie, superhero action portrayed in the manner of a 1970s political thriller. The Winter Soldier is a must-watch for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and for all who just really enjoy a good action movie.
Darren Aronofsky’s biblical epic performed well last week, landing in second place at the box office. While it may seem like revisionist history, the movie has received solid reviews from critics and stars the world’s darling, Emma Watson. If you’re into Bible stories and Russell Crowe yelling dramatically, then this is the movie for you.
This popular young adult novel adaptation continues to earn at the box office, landing in third place last week. Shailene Woodley is appealing as post-apocalyptic action heroine Tris, fighting things attractively while a hunky love interest played by Theo James broods and pines after her. If you’re a fan of the book or want to do something for your girlfriend who is a fan of the book, you should definitely go see this film.
The Christian film God’s Not Dead took fourth place and The Grand Budapest Hotel was in fifth. The options this week are very diverse. Whether you want to stare at Chris Evans’ beauty for two hours or deliberate the existence of God, you’ll have something to see this weekend.
